Ack! What is a girl to do when she can't log in to Facebook? Apparently something is up with Facebook being incredibly slow the past 4 0r 5 days. A blogging and a twittering I must go. We had a fantastic time when the Canadian Snowbirds came to town over the weekend to celebrate Canada's accomplishment of 100 years of air flight.

What If…..

Well Spring should now be well on it’s way! While Spring is a lovely season, it also makes me feel kinda retrospective. This week I want us to go back in time and answer one of those “What If” questions that can float through our heads sometimes. For this weeks dare I want you to really think about it and scrap from your heart, be it a cracked piece of that heart or not. Let’s let some real, strong emotion shine through our pages!

The question: If you could go back in time, to whenever you wanted, and could change ONLY ONE decision that you have made in the past, what would it be? It’s up to you how much you want to share, but it has to be a real answer, a deeper answer. You do NOT have to scrap the question, but make sure that you make the subject clear. We are going to work with symbolism also, sometimes not actually showing the full picture, but using symbolic images and words can really be eye catching and make people think.

Dare Flairs:

* You may only use 1 photo and it may NOT be of a person - choose something that is symbolic of your answer.
* I want you to try and choose elements that are symbolic of the subject your scrapping. Tell the story with the whole page, not just your words. It only has to make sense to you, but I want you to choose 1 element you are using symbolically and explain in your credits why it’s symbolic.
* You must use a neutral or dark background - by neutral I mean gray, tan, beige etc.
* Lastly, Try and make your photo look old and a bit tattered. We are digging into the past so lets reflect that in our image!

Rest of journaling:
If I had never walked through that door, I might never have given up my career as an interior designer. I might have used my degree to make the world beautiful. Maybe I would have ended up more materialistic instead of spiritual. Maybe i would have found success, but would I have become a diamond in the rough?

My Most Recent Layout

Every once in a while, doing a favor for someone else pays off. That is not why I do it, but when you get a gift in return, it is a nice surprise. In the past, I have offered to make layouts for Becky Fleck's newsletter for her site Page Maps. http://www.pagemaps.com

Recently, she asked me to test a few of the accompanying Digital Layered Templates that match her sketches in her Page Maps: Sketches for Creative Layouts book by Memory Makers Books. I was thrilled to do so, and it was all hush-hush until the templates were released.

Earlier this week, Becky sent me a copy of her printed book and all of the layered templates as well. Plus, she even signed the book for me. The above layout is from her sketch/template shown on page 12 (this is my version of that sketch, I am not in the book however).

I've been a huge fan of hers. I loved getting the chance to meet her in person a few years ago at Memory Trends. It's not a secret that I love sketches and most of all, layered templates, so it's a scrapilicious treat to receive this gift from her in exchange for helping out!

We Digi Dare Ya!

We’re putting the spotlight on the lovely Peppermint this week and taking a page from her playbook for our dare!

I have been seeing all of Peppermint’s layouts that she is doing for her Husband weekly telling him the reasons why she loves him. I think they are fantastic and while all of the reasons that you love someone or thing are great, I think that some of them are things that we take for granted and it’s nice to just tell that special someone that you love them for something simple that they do for you. I want you to choose on person or thing in your life and think about 5 reasons why you love them and then create a layout.

Dare Flair:

Use at least 1 photo of the person/thing that your layout is centered around.
I want to see white space on each side of your layout, so center it and fill the center 1/3 of the page from top to bottom.
Journal each reason in a different way. Use Tags, stickers, scrap pieces of paper, etc…
Use red on your layout somewhere, but you can NOT use any hearts anywhere on the page. (Note from Julie Ann: I did not follow this direction by chance but YOU have to follow to win!)

OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM FB SPOKESPERSON BARRY SCHNITT:

Hi everyone,

First, I want to apologize for the delay in response. It’s been a long day with lots of interesting and constructive discussions. Second, I want to thank you for your questions and concerns. As Mark expressed in his blog post on Monday, it was never our intention to confuse people or make them uneasy about sharing on Facebook. I also want to be very clear that Facebook does not, nor have we ever, claimed ownership over people’s content. Your content belongs to you.

We do need certain licenses in order to facilitate the sharing of your content through our service. That’s where the Terms of Use come in. The fact that you’ve raised the questions you have is proof that we haven’t done a good job explaining these licenses in the actual language of the document. In fact, as we were working to answer your questions, we realized the new version of the Terms might technically permit some of the hypothetical situations people have offered. I can assure you, however, that these hypotheticals aren’t ones we had in mind when writing the Terms, and that selling user information for profit or using it to advertise Facebook in some way was never part of our original intent. Assurances aren’t enough, though, and we plan to codify this in our revised Terms through simple language that defines Facebook’s rights much more specifically.

In the meantime, we’ve decided to revert to the old Terms as we work to address this. Mark has explained this in more detail in another blog post (http://blog.facebook.com), and we’ve created a group where people can provide input (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=69048030774). We hope you’ll join this group and post comments. (Love love love love love Facebook!) I neglect this blog since I have become a heavy Facebook user. I have received publication offers and design team offers through my networking on Facebook. In case you haven't heard, Facebook changed its' ToS (Terms of Service) earlier this month. Facebook groups have formed in protest (see links below). Do you save letters, notes or cards? Julie Ann will show you how to make your own file folders as an insert in the album. Journaling:
Getting a new boat brings me back to my earliest childhood memories of boating with my family. I was a toddler and I loved boating and was only mildly fearful of the water. I remember being hesitant to step from the dock into the boat because what if I fell in? I was just a little thing. I remember sitting on the back seat of the boat with my orange life jacket around my neck, and watching the wake left behind. I remember my mom and Aunt taking us to the beach in the boat from our cottages on Lake Erie. I don't remember fishing expeditions but I do have a memory of watching my grandfather fillet a fish. It's a cherished memory because he died when I was not yet 4, and I don't remember much of him at all. I remember that he loved me. It's a strong memory that all of a sudden has me grieving a grandfather I barely remember, and now crying over his loss for the first time in 37 years. It's good because they say all tears are healing tears.

How To Not Get Jaded By The Scrapbook Industry
Some Humble Thoughts for Scrapbook Designers, Scrapbookers Wanting to Be Published, and Be On Design Teams, Etc.

Although I've only been scrapbooking for four years, I jumped right into the industry from Day One. I've never done it for the money, I do it for the love of creating and sharing. I have shared tips I have tried, used and have heard about from others. I've considered myself fortunate to have been viewed as being high-profile by a few although I'm not really sure what that means and if I'm always high-profile or once-in-a-blue moon high profile.

I've sold my creations on Ebay, Etsy, to magazines and book publishers. I've been on online store design teams, LSS design teams, manufacturer design teams, paper design teams, digital design teams, hybrid design teams, on etsy design teams. I've had my work shown on QVC, at CHA and Memory Trends. I've been interviewed and I've been quoted. I've even been fortunate enough to publish others and give them spots on design teams or creative teams. I've been to crops, conventions, training seminars, and classes. I've won some contests and I've miserably lost some contests. I've taught online, via publications, and in person.

All in all, though, I hope that most of the time I'm flying under the radar. I hope that my work is respected and my reputation is trusted. Just read my blog and talk to those who have seen me work in person.

I've had more than one person email me to ask me how I deal with the negative parts of this industry - whether it be people gossiping on message boards, disagreements, or even those smack blogs. Usually my advice is to "not read those things - don't visit those message boards, don't read those blogs, and most of all, never dignify them with a response."

I also have seen some talented scrapbookers sort of disappear from the whole scene and I wonder what happened. I wonder if they became jaded by the whole circus of it all. I could see myself become jaded right about now because of misinterpretations and mistakes. Yet I refuse to go there.

First, I remind myself that I am a scrapbooker because I absolutely love it - I love all of it. I love making the memories. I love writing about the memories. I love having a camera that lets me learn and make mistakes and the software to correct them. I love paper and glue and I also love all the different technology. I love discovering cool new products. I love it when I have a friend who has made something really cool and honoring her (or him) by helping to promote the products. I love sharing my work with my loved ones, with those across the miles via computer, and eventually with those that come after me.

Second, I only take and stay with assignments that I absolutely love and enjoy. Money is never a factor because I have not made scrapbooking my means with which to live off of. The only factor is: does this meet my values, my goals, and my satisfaction? I've turned down many different offers, both that offered an income and those that did not, simply because they would feel too much like work. I don't think scrapbooking should feel like work, do you? I avoid the fatigue of getting involved over-my-head, and scale back quite often.

Third, as I said above, I stay away from those who like to gossip about others because they will eventually gossip about you too. Being gossiped about never feels good, and especially if people do not have all the facts. People often state opinions as if they are true facts and I feel so sad for those who have been hurt by all that.

Fourth, I've worked very hard to create a strong network of scrapbookers that are also my friends. A lone stick may break but a bundle remains strong. Facebook is a great way to network and meet other scrapbookers. 90% or more of my Facebook friends are scrapbookers. It's something we will always have in common, it's a hobby that you don't outgrow if you love it.

Fifth, if you make a mistake, own it but don't be ashamed by it. You'll make it into a crime. If someone turns that mistake around and tries to say you did something you absolutely did not do, then defend yourself with grace. (some of this can be avoided with communication, communication, communications!!!!) This applies to actual relationships, not necessarily to smack blogs. I don't think responding and getting involved in a smack blog conversation is ever a good idea.

Overall, if any of your commitments start to feel overwhelming, a strain, or just not right in any way - then it's time to re-evaluate your priorities and you need to find a way to scale back your commitments perhaps. There is a great workshop at Big Picture Scrapbooking that is called "What's in Your Bucket?" that is useful in determining what is essential and what is not.

When I look at these photos, I am reminded of the joy we felt when the new bike path along Lakeshore Blvd. was complete. We were able to ride our bikes all the way to Seabreeze Amusement park and beyond to the marina. We stopped here and there along the way to snap a few photos. We were silly and carefree. We felt blessed to live in such a fun place. Since then, we’ve taken the bike path many times, not always all the way to Seabreeze. Most of the time we get to the end of Durand Beach and then turn around for home. It’s a wonderfully scenic ride. We just discovered on our last ride that in the late 1920’s there used to be a huge bathhouse on Lakeshore Blvd. at Durand Beach. I can’t even imagine it now as there are no traces of it. It’s a potent reminder to take photos of things we take for granted, as they might be long forgotten in seventy years. For instance, they are re-routing 590 where it ends at the marina. Change is constant, our scrapped memories are forever. Photo taken 2007. Journaled September 18, 2008.

Come join the fun! say it with letters! is looking for 1-2 design team members who are energized, talented, creative and versatile! We design custom cut letters and shapes and need your talent to show them off in creative ways!

We will be accepting applications through Friday, October 1st. Winners will be e-mailed directly and we’ll make a formal announcement on or before Tuesday, October 7th. The position will begin with a November project (you’ll receive your letters or shapes in October) and will continue for six months. After the six month period, the position may continue on a month to month basis, if agreed upon by both parties.

Needed:
- Submit 3 to 4 altered projects that show off your personal style (1 or 2 scrapbook la youts or cards are acceptable.) Photos should be clear and no larger than 500×500 pixels. They do not need to be created especially for us but, they should be something fairly new that shows your current style. Using our products is a plus! Dear Reid,
When I decided I'd like to have sleepovers this
summer with you at our home once a week, it
was because I’ve always had a special connection
with you. I came into this family when the nieces
and nephews were coming out of childhood, and
before I knew it they were teenagers. Teenagers
prefer not to hang around adults like me. But I’ve
known you since Day 1 of your life. You are
sometimes like my little shadow. I am one of the
only adults that will get down on your level and
play with you. You are still young enough to eat
up all the adult attention you can get, being the
youngest with everyone else much older than you.
I could never say that I favor one of you kids over
the others because there is equal love in my heart
for you all. It is a fact, though, that you let me into
your world unlike the other kids in our family.
Sometimes you slip and call me “Mom” and sometimes
you call Uncle David “Dad” but you always catch
yourself. It’s amazing that even your mother tells
you I am like a second or third mother to you
(after Grandma), and she thinks it is a good thing
for you to feel comfortable enough to slip and call
me “Mom.” I like being your Aunt. I like showing
you the world through my eyes, and being a confidant
that maybe I wouldn’t be if I was your mother. I am honored
to be able to have an influence over your development and
to have your adoration but you also have my adoration.
You have better recall & memory than anyone I
know, you are utterly unique. You bring more joy and
love into my world than what I already have, and when
I was already content as can be. I am the luckiest
Aunt in the world!

Scrapbooks, etc. has a new column, and we’re searching for submissions. The column will be called “Etc.” and it is all about using your scrapbook supplies for home décor and gift ideas…projects other than scrapbook pages. As one of our editors (the fabulous Michelle Rubin) said, “This is about getting your supplies off the page and using them in new ways.”

If you have the April 2006 issue of Scrapbooks, etc, this column will be very similar to the ideas featured in our “Deck the Walls” column…wall art, memo boards, keepsake boxes, etc. (hence the name of the column!). We’d love to see your most creative and unique ideas!

Hybrid Class #1 Finale!

Here is my finished layout and your final tasks to complete this layout! Let's attach everything to the background paper you chose on Day 2 - Task #2.

The additional items that I used to complete my hybrid layout include embellishments I found at Target. These include KI Memories Pop Culture Softies Buttons (Round), KI Memories Pop Culture Ribbon, and KI Memories Pop Culture epoxy stickers, and KI Memories Pop Culture chipboard pieces. The chipboard bird I used is from Crafty Secrets Sweet Chips.

The flowers I used are Prima Marketing Inc., and come in the Bitty Bag. I outlined the edge of the flowers with Stickles Glitter Glue.

Hybrid Class #1 - Task 4 - Almost Finished!!

Today is PRINTING day!!! We are almost done with our hybrid layout...and when you're done - you'll say "well - that was so simple! I'll do it again!"

Here's what we are printing:

Photo or photos
Journal tag
Embellishment tag
Patterned paper strip
Yesterday's word art tag if you haven't printed it yet

PHOTO
My photo is about 5x7 and it is a landscape photo from a trip to Key West. You can print out one photo that size, or several photos that fit into a 5x7 space. If you want to make a 5x7 photo collage in Photoshop Elements, follow these instructions.

Open your photographs.
Create a new document by going to File --> New Document. Enter in the dimensions 5" x 7" at 300 dpi, white background.
Drag your photo onto the new document. Re-size using the "move" tool.
Drag the additional photos onto the new document, and they will be on a new layer(s). If you need to trim a photo so it will fit, use the rectangle marquee tool. You'll have to make sure the photo's layer is selected, draw a rectangle around the part you wish to cut away. Click ctrl+x to cut.

JOURNAL TAG
This is going to be where your journaling goes. If you normally hand-write your journaling, try typing out your journaling onto a digital tag with the computer, OR if you have a regular typewriter, print out the digital tag and then add your journaling to it with a typewriter. If you normally type your journaling, try hand-writing.

EMBELLISHMENT TAG
A circle tag is the last hybrid item for this layout. If you need a circle freebie, you can get one at the SIS TV digi blog here, or here. It's a downloadble PDF.

PATTERNED PAPER STRIP
Choose a digital patterned paper that screams summer or co-ordinates with your photo. We only need a strip of it about 1" x 11".

PRINTING
I print on matte photo paper, size 8.5" x 11". So when I print a photo, I also print out the tags I need and the patterned paper strip I need.

There are some great tutorials on printing out there...one place to look is at Prima Hybrid. If you don't find what you need, I believe Di Hickman has some on her blog too.

Hybrid Class #1 - Task #3 How to Create Word Art

Clouds are a big trend right now. Let's take a cloud shape into Photoshop Elements and use a favorite quote to create word art.

If you are short on time, you can purchase cloud word art such as the Twitterpated (A Little Birdie Told Me) Elements by Dianne Rigdon.

If you want to make your own, then try this:

For the cloud, do one of the following:

Doodle a cloud on blank paper with a pen. Scan it in and open in photoshop elements.
Doodle a cloud with your graphics tablet, and open it in photoshop elements.
Find a digital cloud embellishmet that you have already purchased, that has room for word art inside.

For the word art, find a favorite quote.

Using handwriting fonts in different colors, type the quote with the Text tool on a layer above your cloud, positioned inside the cloud.

Add some doodles.

Now print this out or save it to print tomorrow with a few other items we will be printing for the layout.

Question: I can't wait to see your completed layout so I can get an idea of what kit I should use for my own! How many pictures should I look for, how much journaling, etc? Thanks Julie! I'm excited about this! - Kelleigh

Answer: I love your enthusiasm Kelleigh. We each have a different process for layouts - some start with photos, some start with journaling. I am having you try something new by starting with these techniques and products first. It's a great exercise in stretching your creative skills. The photos and journaling will be in a separate step later this week. Enjoy the process!!!

Question: I've made 2 hybride ATC's in the past, can I use one of them to link? - Iris
Answer: Definitely. If you have a hybrid (must have digital in it) ATC that you have not scrapped and want to use it, then go ahead.

Free Hybrid Layout Class 1 - Part 2

Yesterday's layout task was digital so today's task will focus on physical products.

Hybrid Layout Class Task #2

Find a background paper for your layout. My background paper is 12" x 12" - you need to decide if you want yours 12x12 or 8x8 or 6x12 or 8.5x11. or 6x6. If you need to trim it. You'll also need one or two scraps that are about 1" wide and over 6" long.

That's all for today. Simple, easy. Some of you have a large stash of patterned paper. Some of you may need to go shopping - and a tip for scrapbook shopping is - only buy what you need!!!!

Free Hybrid Layout Class - Starts Today

I made a hybrid layout yesterday, and so I decided to offer this layout as a class. Each day this week, I'll give you a simple task...and each day we'll add to the layout. By the end of the week, you'll have a beautiful hybrid layout. Maybe I'll share a sneak peek of my layout tomorrow, if you want.

Hybrid Layout Class Task #1

Create a digital ATC {artist trading card} card and print it out. Set this aside someplace safe to be used on your layout by the end of the week. If you want, add a rubon to your ATC.

You can either create the trading card from scratch or you can use a pre-designed card. See the links below.
